7. Which is better for my child one on one or small group tutoring?

One of the advantages of a small group environment over one on one tuition is the opportunity to be part of a supportive and motivated environment. Learning is maximised when students are motivated, confident and concentrating on tasks and in a group environment where collaborative learning is encouraged, students truly do benefit from learning and teaching one another. The skills and confidence students develop in the small class lead to independent learning and the willingness to ask questions and get full value from classes at school.

A student in a one on one environment can sometimes find that they become dependent on their tutor and struggle to perform well in assessments where their tutor is not available to assist them. Having said that, while it may be too intense an approach for some students, done properly, one on one can also be a very powerful way of improving a student’s results where individual attention is all that is required to assist the students understand the subject matter and gain much-needed confidence.

8. Can you send tutors out to my home? Or if the tutoring service is at a specific location is there an opportunity to visit the location?

For my one-on-one clients, the location will be at a place of mutual agreement, either at your home or at a public place with good facilities (such as a public library etc), or at our facilities. There are 3 stipulations that need to be in place in order for this arrangement to work. There needs to be an adult present at all times or it needs to be in a public place where there is the continual presence of people. And secondly, it needs to be a place that is a suitable environment amenable to learning for the student. Finally, It also needs to be a location that is easy for both the tutor and client to get to.

All group tuition will be held at our premises and parents are encouraged to visit our location for our initial consultation to assess your child’s needs and also to inspect our premises.

9. How long is each tuition session?

One on One tuition is charged on an hourly basis. Usually, one hour or one and half hours is sufficient enough if meeting once a week. Because it is a specialised service a premium rate is charged.
Alternatively, for a group tutoring scenario, lessons run for 75min and are based on our system and methodology, this allows roughly for the same level of productivity as 1-hour individual attention at a fraction of the cost. A minimum number of students for the group tutoring rate to apply is 3 students and there will be a maximum of 6 students per group.

10. How often should my child attend tuition?

Most students attend one tuition session each week for each subject. Using our methodology one hour per week is more than sufficient. Extra sessions are available depending on the needs of the student and this will usually only be required for in the short term to achieve certain short-term goals.

11. What happens if my child misses a session?

At SKY Academy, we encourage regular attendance as a way to ensure that progress and momentum are maintained and carefully tracked. This will require a commitment by both parent and student. For our group services, we encourage parents to sign up to our quarterly membership packages, which includes weekly lessons of 75min and access to our study lounge every fortnight on Saturday morning at our premises. Where lessons are missed, we have a 24-hour policy for cancellation without incurring a penalty. Where the requisite notice has been given, there will be the opportunity catch up on missed lesson through makeup lessons.

12. Do you assess students before they begin tuition?

Students are assessed in their first tuition session by way of an assessment interview as well as a short quiz. This is done to make the most effective use of time and to develop a comprehensive program of work that will address the direct needs of the student. If necessary, an assessment can be arranged before the first tuition session. Students will be assessed ongoingly to make sure the tuition program is meeting their needs.

13. Do you have a special way of helping students learn?

At SKY Academy, through years of refinement, we have systemised our methodology and approach to ensure that it achieves the most effective and powerful result for your child and yet is still flexible enough to cater for your child’s unique character, their learning style, and learning needs. We have a 7 step approach to our methodology and our lessons are always structured with 3 core components in mind. Please visit “Our Services” page for more information.

14. Do you set homework?

Under the SKY Academy’s methodology, the real progress a student makes happens in between lessons. Just like a the engine of a car, in order to perform at its optimum to reach its destination, operates at a certain fuel to air ratio, we have found that for students to achieve their best and see results that are aligned with the progress to reach their end goals, homework needs to be seen as part and parcel of the process

15. How do I find out about my child’s progress?

Parents who use our services have an ongoing right to get accurate feedback on their child’s progress. We can be contacted at any time on an informal basis either by phone (leave a message) or by email. There will be 5 opportunities to get more formal feedback through an end of term written report which will be emailed to parent’s address, as well as 1 parent and teacher evening per year to discuss your child’s progress.

16. Does the tutor hold the appropriate Working With Children check? Have reference checks been conducted on the tutors?

As a currently employed qualified high school mathematics teacher in the mainstream educational system, all our tutors have had to undergo rigorous mandatory background, and child safety reference checks and registrations. On top of that SKY Academy ensures that all relevant documentation relevant to checking and clearing their tutors has been made to ensure that the safety and welfare of our clients come first and that the integrity of our tutors and operations are our unique edge in this competitive industry.

17. Have the tutors been interviewed face-to-face by the tutoring service?
